An introduction to photographing portraits using window light

Keen to use window light in your portrait photography but not sure where to start? This is the tutorial for you.

A window light source can be very adaptable. It can be shaped to create flat even lighting or dramatic mood lighting simply by changing how close or far away you place your model in relation to the light.

Adding a silver or white reflector to the mix can increase or decrease contrast. The way you pose your subject can also influence the final outcome.

In this tutorial, Gina will show you:

  • Posing techniques to flatter a face and reduce double chins
  • How exposing for highlights or shadows can influence the look of your portrait
  • Short vs broad lighting
  • How to direct a character portrait
  • Working with reflectors
  • Creating mood using cutters
  • Reducing contrast with fill lighting.
