Ep 230: From personal projects to a book deal with Craig Wetjen

Meet Craig Wetjen, an award-winning professional photographic artist and a best-selling author with 33 years in the photography industry. Craig started his photographic career shooting for local newspapers in Connecticut, USA. He went on to work for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory before moving to Australia where in he established Melbourne’s RMIT University’s first digital imaging subject.

Craig’s published a book in 2016 titled “Men and Their Sheds” which, just after 3 months on the selves became a best-selling book. He documented 101 men and their relationship the shed has to his physical and mental health.

Craig Wetjen is a national and international award winning professional photographic artist and a best-selling author with 33 years in the photography industry.

Craig started his photographic career shooting for local newspapers in Connecticut, USA. Some career highlights are working for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory documenting the Mars Pathfinder and Saturn’s Cassini projects prior to moving to Australia where in 1996 Craig established Melbourne’s RMIT University’s first digital imaging subject.

Craig’s published a book in 2016 titled “Men and Their Sheds” which, just after 3 months on the selves became a best-selling book. Men and Their Sheds, documented 101 men and their relationship the shed has to his physical and mental health. He continues to work on personal projects with his latest project title Project Street. Project Street is a project where 30 local photographers photograph the streets of a major city in Australia edit 1 photo exhibit and auction their 1 photo and auction their photography for a local charity. Project Street has already raised over $19,000 for local charities.

Craig has had many exhibitions including a featured exhibition at the Ballarat Biennale and the Head On Photo Festival to name a few. His passion for lighting and using light to capture the true essence of one’s portrait and truly getting to know the person in front of his camera.

He is an educator of photography, an industry mentor, and a conduit too many professional links within the industry. He is a lecturer and tutor in photography at several universities in Melbourne.
